Reetha can be used as a fine powder mixed with water in your palms to form a mild emulsion, or boiled together with Shikakai and Amla into the legendary 3-herb Ayurvedic foaming shampoo.
1 tablespoon Reetha Powder, 1 tablespoon Shikakai Powder, 1 tablespoon Amla Powder, 2 cups water.
Mix the three powders in 2 cups of water and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes until gentle lather forms. Cool, strain, and massage into damp scalp as your primary shampoo.

Trioveda sources premium Soapnuts (Sapindus mukorossi / Sapindus trifoliatus) from wild mountain groves in the sub-Himalayan foothills and Central Indian highlands. These native terroirs yield dense, thick-walled soapnut pericarp packed with up to 18% natural triterpenoid saponins by weight, delivering exceptional botanical foaming and cleansing.
Reetha pericarp naturally secretes complex saponins—amphiphilic plant molecules featuring a water-soluble hydrophilic head and an oil-binding lipophilic tail. When agitated in warm water, these natural molecules encapsulate grease, micro-dirt, and environmental toxins into micro-micelles that rinse away cleanly without harsh chemical foaming agents like sodium lauryl sulfate.
Take 4–5 de-seeded Reetha pods, 4 Shikakai pods, and 5 pieces of dry Amla. Soak them in 500ml water overnight. In the morning, boil the mixture for 10–12 minutes, then let it cool. Gently mash the softened pods with your hands to release all saponins and botanical mucilage, then strain through cheesecloth. The resulting liquid produces a gentle foaming herbal shampoo.
Yes. Reetha possesses gentle antimicrobial and sebum-regulating properties. For active individuals, athletes, or those working in polluted urban environments, diluted Reetha wash cleanses sweat and sebum daily without disturbing the epidermal microbiome or causing rebound sebum production.
Absolutely. Mildly brewed Reetha liquid serves as an extraordinary hypoallergenic face wash for acne-prone skin, cleansing pores without synthetic surfactants. Historically in royal Indian households, Reetha water was also the premier cleanser for pure mulberry silk, pashmina wool, and gold jewellery, proving its exceptional gentleness on delicate organic fibers.
Metropolitan municipal water supply often contains high levels of dissolved calcium carbonate, magnesium, and residual chlorine. Reetha acts as a natural botanical chelating agent, dissolving stubborn mineral scale and product buildup from the hair shaft to restore natural elasticity, bounce, and shine.
By clearing clogged follicular pores and eliminating fungal microbes and dandruff-causing yeasts, Reetha creates an optimal scalp environment for healthy anagen (growth) phase hair. Massaging the scalp with cool Reetha brew stimulates micro-circulation to the roots, noticeably reducing breakage and shedding.
In classical Ayurvedic pharmacology, Reetha (Arishta) is characterized by Tikta (bitter) and Katu (pungent) rasas, Laghu (light) and Tikshna (sharp/penetrating) gunas, and Ushna (warming) virya. It effectively liquefies and clears thick Kapha accumulations, greasy buildup, and Ama from the micro-channels (Srotas) of the scalp.
